Welcome Note

Dear Parents,

"If mom says "no," she means it. If dad says "no," it means maybe".
- Joseph, age 13

This time I thought we would go with a quote from a 13 year old child. Mmmmm looks like children all over the world know who the boss is when it comes to discipline!!!!!!!.........

I know we have not been able to release Newsletters on time and I take full responsibility for it. This year it has been difficult to keep our schedule with the Newsletter. We are however doing well with our achedemic schedules. Our transition has been smooth - both the Pre-Mont and our outgoing - children have adjusted well to their new environment and classroom respectively. The month of Oct was fun as our children really enjoyed their Sports day & Dasara celebrations. Prayag would like to wish all our winners "CONGRATULATIONS". We had a great time and so did our children.

In this letter I would like to share an e-mail I received from a parent of my Montessori child - Sachit. This is a letter from his mother -

"As I mentioned in the P.T.A. meeting, I am sharing a video link to Sachit's reading. He has become a Pro, especially in the last three months...reads about 5 - 6 books a day! Thanks for doing a great job in tapping this talent in him. http://www.youtube.com/sundeesac "

I request you to please take a look at this and I would like to add that Sachit (he is in Montessori level-1) has also received a lot of support from his parents. The way he turns to the next page and starts to read from the left top corner - at his age shows that he is being read to and is also being helped to read at home.

Children need a lot of support or help to supplement what they learn at school. When it is reinforced on a day-to-day basis it makes it very easy for them. Please do not think that I am asking you to force your child or pressurize him/her in any way - far from it - Reading time should be family time, it can be between siblings or bedtime stories you read to your child but if read phonetically - the child can relate to what is being taught at school. Once he has received 4 vowel sounds and 7-8 consonant sounds at school you can get them to read with you. Start with simple books, which have repetitive words in the sentence. How will you know when to start it??? Very simple write the alphabet down and ask your child if he/she can tell you the sound- It is the sound we should get the child to say and not the alphabet. If not please do ref-check with his adult or me.

If you need more information or want to give your feed back please e-mail me at prayag_montessori@yahoo.co.in.

Thanks & Regards
Amitha Prashanth

Every Child Can Succeed
Studies and academics have become the focus of life for a child. All parents feel that their child should perform well, get good grades, and thus make a brilliant future for him/her. All other matters are of secondary importance when it comes to academic performance.

If the child is doing well, getting good grades, we are proud and happy. If the child is not performing well, we get very concerned. Often we think that the harder a child works at his studies, the better will be his grades. Many a time we realize the hard way that this is not true. Some children breeze through exams with hardly any preparation, while others seem to burn the midnight oil and yet fair poorly.

When the child is not performing well, the question that arises is- is the child intelligent and lazy, or is he dull and incompetent? Should we send him for tuition? This situation becomes even more exasperating when the child is doing reasonably well in a few subjects, and miserably bad in others. How many parents have spent sleepless nights wondering how they can make the child solve simple mathematical problems, or how they can drill Kannada grammar into his head?

Teachers put pressure on the parents when the child is not performing well. Parents blame the school for not teaching properly. The child is at the receiving end from both sides, and starts showing behavioral problems. Often comparisons are made with siblings, cousins or classmates who are performing much better. Matters seem to go downhill on all fronts. Even appealing to doctors and religious gurus does not seem to help. What is the solution?

There is a way out

Research in behavioral sciences has uncovered that all children do not learn at the same pace or by the same method. Some are quick on the uptake but bad at reproducing on paper. Some seem to learn fast, and forget equally quickly. Others seem to have mental blocks that prevent them from grasping, regardless of the number of times they are taught. Unfortunately our education system tries to equalize all of them. This results in some children getting left behind, much to the anguish of parents and the irritation of teachers.

Earlier such children with learning difficulties would be languishing in the system. It will be surprising to know that some of the recent celebrities who have been identified to have learning disabilities(LD) include Albert Einstein, ex-president Bill Clinton, present president of USA George Bush, the most successful entrepreneur Bill Gates, and UK Prime Minister Tony Blair. They had to struggle through their schooling-but today's LD children need not. The term "Learning Disability" may sound very alarming to a parent, but it is imperative that we do not run away from acknowledging and accepting it. Children with LD in the current generation can do as well as, or even better than, children who do not have LD.

With the advent of a field known as "special education", children with special needs can be catered to, and brought into the mainstream. There are children with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLDs) such as difficulty in language, in writing, in math, etc. With individual attention and guidance from experts, these children can overcome their difficulties are perform as well as anyone else. All that is required is correct and timely diagnosis, remedial intervention by experts, and the right support from parents.

So, when a child appears to be intelligent and capable, but is not being able to perform academically, please do not label him as lazy or good-for-nothing. He may require some special teaching techniques and a lot of TLC-tender loving care.
